Abstract:
Analysis on the present effects of building extension shows that there are numerous problems affecting neighbourhood at terrace housing scheme. These problems are generally associated with lack of consideration to the neighbourhood sensitivity during construction works. Apart from that, it is also contributed by lack of knowledge, skills and experiences not only in the process of design but also in method and technology of building construction. This paper analyses the level of awareness and issues on building extension works at low cost terrace housing scheme using quantitative and qualitative data obtained from local authority in Shah Alam (Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam), interviews and questionnaire feedbacks from residences of three residential community, housing contractors and through observations. Based from the findings, several recommendations are made to improve the neighbourhood condition during and after construction works are completed. Several proposals on the important role of Building Surveyors are also highlighted for improvement of the current housing extension scenario in Malaysia.
